Lauletta said that he and his exec team originally set up the deal by going to meet with Walmart VP/Constituent Relations & Racial Equity Tony Waller, who had been following Wallace’s story as the first African American to win a race in NASCAR’s premier series in decades. ROOM TO GROW: This deal does not initially involve any on-track elements like a paint scheme or even branding on Wallace’s firesuit, but team President Steve Lauletta told SBJ that it is not out of the question that the relationship could grow to that in time. Walmart has remained involved in NASCAR in recent seasons tangentially through the sponsor appearances of some of its vendors like Kevin Harvick and Busch Beer, but it has not been a sponsor of a team in years. The sides quietly started the deal this past weekend by having Wallace make an appearance at the “Health is Wealth” Summit in Nashville, where Walmart partnered with the Black Enterprise media company to put on the event. The agreement was announced this morning, and it will be focused at least at first around the retailer's GoLiveBetter initiative, which works on addressing healthcare disparities and mental health in the Black community. Walmart is dipping its toe back into NASCAR by becoming a new partner of 23XI Racing in a deal that is initially focused on off-track activation and store appearances with driver Bubba Wallace.
